Custom-made dentures are one of the options we offer to replace missing teeth. When a person has multiple dental problems, such as gum disease or many decayed teeth, dentures offer an affordable way to fix these problems. The process to make a denture works like this:
Typically, a patient will come to the office and already have some missing teeth, many cavities, and gum disease. After an examination is completed, treatment options are presented to the patient, and they will decide on the course of treatment. Let’s say they decide to have a denture made. An impression or mold, a bite record, and shade are taken, and these are used to design the denture. The remaining teeth are then extracted, and the denture is placed the same day. This approach is called an immediate denture because the denture is made prior to the teeth being removed and is given to the patient when the teeth are extracted.
Dentures can be made to replace both the upper and lower teeth. Usually, upper dentures fit well, but many times, immediate lower dentures do not. This is where dental implant dentures can be helpful. Dental implant dentures will use anywhere from two to four implants to help hold the denture in place. The implants serve as anchors to keep the lower denture from moving around. The lower denture will fit much better, be more comfortable, and eating will be more enjoyable for the patient again.
Immediate dentures can be made to look very natural, and often times, a patient is much happier with their smile once they have dentures. Don’t get me wrong, your healthy natural teeth are much better than dentures, but immediate dentures can be an affordable way to restore an incomplete smile.
